UGLY FAÇADE SHED FOR COTTAGE LOOK

By Jane Smith

A new mural on Liberton Christian School’s implement shed has everyone fooled.

Principal Nel van’t Wout always wanted the cottage façade painted on the “ugly pink” implement shed, and at the beginning of this year asked artist Kyra Jones, who had done smaller murals for the school, to transform it.

“But, in my wildest dreams, I never thought it would be as nice as this,” Miss van’t Wout said.

Mrs Jones blended different elements of Nelson cottages from photographs to create the mural, and it took her and ex-pupil Shiloh Taylor (18) 162½ hours to complete, over several months.

“I think it was really good for the children to watch it happening, especially something so big. They would come out at playtimes and say ‘Oh look at that’ and ask questions.”

The mural was extremely realistic and had fooled several people.

“One person said did they paint the rust on, because it still has a rusty roof on one side,” Miss van’t Wout laughed.

A builder had also enquired who had added the bay window to the building, and a woman had been seen knocking on the painted front door.
