School raises $1800 for man’s treatment

Pupils at Liberton Christian School in Pine Hill are delighted after they raised $1800 for former school pupil Keiri Samuel.

The money, was raised at the school’s end-of-year show—“The Great Christmas Robbery”—to help Mr Samuel pay for medical treatment following the removal of an apple-sized grade-three brain tumour.

Mr Samuel is trying to raise $46,000 to pay for a chemotherapy drug called Temozolomide, which was not funded by Pharmac.

Principal Fiona Sizemore said pupils at the school decided to help Mr Samuel because the 33-year-old was a pupil between 1983 and 1985, and his family was well known in the local community.

“The kids are thrilled. For them, this has been one of those tangible opportunities to see that they can make a difference. They feel like they are helping to give Keiri a chance at life.

“They’ve really taken it on board. It gave them a higher purpose during the production,” she said.

Family friend John Broughton said plans were now confirmed for a “Christmas at the Pa” musical sing-along on Saturday at 7pm.

He said the concert would be held at Araiteuru Marae on Shetland St and the music would be provided by the Mac Te Ngahue Maori Showband and the Araiteuru Marae Christmas Choir.

“The public are asked to bring their own rugs, cushions or camp chairs to sit on and are invited to enjoy and participate in a happy Christmas musical sing-along of Christmas carols and Christmas songs.”
