PAIR HONOUREDLiberton Christian School celebratesBy Bruce Munro Liberton Christian School recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and during the weekend of celebrations Tony and Jean Tromop were honoured for their part in its establishment. In March 1981, the Catholic church’s surplus school in Pine Hill was identified by supporters of the new Christian school as a likely site. In June, the Tromops visited family in Holland and approached the Amsterdam-based School and Gospel organisation, which helped finance Christian schools worldwide. “They told us they had just distributed the funds they had, but would be visiting New Zealand later in the year,” Mr Tromop recalled. The group had bought the property by December when the Dutch visitor arrived and offered $34,000, about half the cost of the small school. Liberton Christian School opened in February 1982 with 17 pupils and one teacher. The Tromops maintained an active involvement in the school’s life. “It is a place where the principles that parents instill in the home are carried on at school, and where the children are academically prepared for life,” Mrs Tromop said. “Finances have always been tight but the Lord has always provided.” Liberton Christian School currently has three teachers and 50 pupils.
